Painting En Plein Air
Telling a Visual Story, Keeping it Fresh, Light filled, Spontaneous!

About the Artist
For me, plein air painting is all about looking and feeling, experiencing what nature delivers and then turning that experience into a visible painting “encounter”. Nature is the teacher. I especially am intrigued by the intangibles involved, including my own subconscious response to the outdoor scene that I then express in my work.
I believe everything living has a season, and each season is filled with joy. Telling a story—- capturing the morning light, creating effects of color, and sharing a visual experience with others—- is the driving force behind my plein air pastels.
After several careers over decades, including art teaching, advertising sales, advertising illustration, newspaper cartooning and developing a native plant nursery and landscape design business in southern Colorado, I made a commitment to rekindle the artist inside me and return to painting.
Four years ago, I took a pastel workshop at Ghost Ranch, in Abiquiu, New Mexico, with Diane Grammar, doing pastel painting en plein air. Right then two great lifelong passions came together, being outdoors and immersing myself in making art. I was hooked. Since that first workshop, I have continued to explore the joys both of “finding” my outdoor subjects, and delighting in the pure spontaneity of plein air painting.
